Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
This has been a big issue that seems to get swept under the rug. No studies showing the effects of GMO Food.
Maybe in 100 years we will
reap what they sow???
Why the issue? Because they could control the food or the fear of the unknown?
I did some researching the whole GMO thing and this is what I found.
Any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques.
Exploit natural forms of gene transfer, such as the ability of Agrobacterium to transfer genetic material to plants (Agrobacterium is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria)
What does it do?
It transfers DNA between itself and plants, and for this reason it has become an important tool for genetic engineering.
Agrobacterium can be responsible for opportunistic infections in humans with weakened immune systems
Uses are for : biological and medical research, production of pharmaceutical drugs, experimental medicine
(e.g. gene therapy), and agriculture
The intended purpose of the genetic modification:
research human diseases (for example, to develop animal models for these diseases);
produce industrial or consumer products (fibres for multiple uses);
produce products intended for human therapeutic use (pharmaceutical products or tissue for implantation);
enrich or enhance the animals’ interactions with humans (hypo-allergenic pets);
enhance production or food quality traits (faster growing fish, pigs that digest food more efficiently);
improve animal health (disease resistance)
Why do this?
This is what it is to accomplish:
improved food quality, quantity, or availability
This sounds good, but it looks like a Trojan Horse to me
(a constructed huge wooden horse that hid a select force of men inside)
Have you heard of it?
The World Food Prize?
Thats right, most likely intended for a good purpose, to encourage others to care for life on earth, harmony.
Emphasizes the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people.
In 2008 Monsanto donated $5 million Dollars for the World Food Prize. The winners receive 250,000 dollars. In 2013 Robert Fraley of Monsanto; Marc Van Montagu of Ghent University in Belgium and founder of Plant Genetic Systems and Crop Design; and Mary-Dell Chilton of the University of Washington and Washington University in St. Louis and Syngenta were awarded the World Food Prize. Why, for improving the quality, quantity or availability of food.
The detection of genetically modified organisms is possible by biochemical means.
Yikes! I don’t even know what that means.
I can not imagine to farm these days and hope that a GMO is not invading my crops or animals!
The pollen from the plants is distributed in the environment like that of any other crop. This distribution has led to concerns over the effects of GM crops on the environment. The effects include
gene flow, pesticide resistance and greenhouse gas emissions.
Traits potentially can cross into neighboring plants of the same or closely related species through
three different types of gene flow: crop-to-crop, crop-to-weedy, and crop-to-wild.
The United States has no legislation governing the relationship among mixtures of farms that grow organic, conventional and GM crops.
THE SEED, traditionally, farmers in all nations saved their own seed from year to year.
With GMO, Monsanto’s typical license (covering transfer of the seeds themselves) forbids saving seeds, and also requires purchasers to sign a separate patent license agreement.
Control of the food, this is so wrong
that which nature has provided and they now control it through means that are un-natural.
Monsanto has patented its seed and it obligates farmers who choose to buy its seeds to sign a license agreement, obligating them store or sell, but not plant, all the crops that they grow.
Monsanto has filed patent infringement suits against 145 farmers, proceeded to trial with only 11.The defendants claimed unintentional contamination by gene flow. Monsanto won every case.
I can’t understand how they even thought they could control nature in regards to pollination or direction of the wind??
The people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution, rather than the corporations and market institutions they believe have come to dominate the global food system.
I don’t think the traditional farmers should carry the price of their actions that is handed down to us the consumer!
There are no studies showing the risk to humans of GMO foods.
I did find a interesting read here:
What are the consequences down the road?
I do my best as a Grand Parent to raise a healthy child.
Just coming up with a health snack that I pray will not damage him in the long term, because I don’t know what the side effects of GMO’s are, is a task?
This is what I used
Food and environment play a huge role in development of our children that should not be taken lightly.
They are our future!
Small local farms need a come back!
